Meet the inspiring man who's lived in a hospital for 45 years
For the past 45 years — almost his entire life — Paulo Henrique Machado has lived in the hospital. The 45-year-old contracted polio as a baby and is still hooked up to an artificial respirator for 24 hours a day at Clinicas hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Machado outlived almost all his childhood friends in the "polio ward," and has been able to train as a computer animator in the hospital. He's planning to make a series of short films based on the artwork of his lifelong companion and fellow patient Eliana Zagui, who he describes as his "sister." Because of advances in medicine, the pair has been able to leave the hospital "at least 50 times," including memorable trips to the beach.
